Amanah concedes Puteri Wangsa to PKR for Johor polls

Amanah has agreed to make way for PKR to contest the Puteri Wangsa seat in the upcoming Johor election.

Its state chairperson Aminolhuda Hassan said the right to contest the seat went to PKR, the Pakatan Harapan lynchpin, after several rounds of negotiations.

“It’s fine, we agree with their (PKR’s) wishes. We prioritise loyalty in this coalition.

“Although this seat is traditionally ours and Larkin is traditionally PKR’s, if they (PKR) still want it, then it (Amanah’s opportunity to contest the Puteri Wangsa) is closed.

“They can do whatever they want - we can’t say anything about it. The important thing is to contest as ‘gentlemen’.

“We freely give up the seat,” he was quoted as saying by Berita Harian at the Johor Amanah machinery launch last night.

Seat tussle

On June 16, it was reported that Johor PKR vice-chairperson Jimmy Puah said his party would represent Harapan in Puteri Wangsa at the July 11 polls.

The Tebrau MP claimed that coalition partners, including Amanah, had agreed on the matter.

However, later the same day, Free Malaysia Today reported that Aminolhuda denied discussions with PKR on Puteri Wangsa and another state seat had concluded.

The seat is held by Muda president Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz, who will not be defending it in the upcoming Johor election.

The seat became a point of contention after Muda parted ways with Harapan, and Amanah was the first to signal its intention to reclaim the constituency it had “given up” in the 2022 state election.

Muda made its electoral debut during that election, contesting seven seats and winning only Puteri Wangsa as part of a loose opposition alliance with Harapan parties.

Johor expects to see multi-cornered contests as BN and Harapan face off in all 56 seats, while uncertainty clouds Perikatan Nasional after PAS ended political ties with Bersatu. - Mkini
