Its epicentre was located at 1.7° North and 102.7° East at a depth of 10km, about 20km southwest of Batu Pahat.
MetMalaysia said tremors may have been felt in areas around Batu Pahat.
It said it is continuing to monitor the situation.
The quake this morning was the sixth recorded in the district, following the last occurrence on April 4 in the waters off Batu Pahat, which measured 3.1 on the Richter scale. An earlier quake in the area occurred on March 14, measuring 3.2 on the Richter scale.
Johor has experienced a series of mild earthquakes, beginning with a magnitude 4.1 quake that struck 5km west of Segamat at a depth of 10km on Aug 24 last year. - FMT
