Muda scales down number of Johor polls candidates from 7 to 4

Muda has scaled down the number of candidates it is fielding for the Johor state election, from seven in 2022 to just four this time around.

Party president Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz - who will not be defending her Puteri Wangsa seat - said during the candidate unveiling event last night that the party wanted to avoid fielding candidates just for the sake of contesting.

The four seats Muda will be contesting are Puteri Wangsa, Maharani, Simpang Jeram, and Bukit Batu.

Puteri Wangsa - which will be contested by Amira's aide Rashifa Aljuneid - is the only seat that the party is recontesting.

It is expected to be a tough contest with Pakatan Harapan looking to reclaim the seat that Amanah made way for Muda in the 2022 state election.

This time around, Amanah has ceded Puteri Wangsa to PKR - which is expected to field former education minister, Maszlee Malik.

Muda will also likely clash with PKR in Bukit Batu - which lies in DAP stronghold Kulai. The youth party is fielding 53-year-old Premanand Maniam in the seat.

Meanwhile, Maharani is the urban heart of Muar and will be contested by Amir "Jack" Fiqri, who is an aide to former Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.

Maharani has changed hands twice in the past two state elections.

Simpang Jeram, a seat neighbouring Maharani, will be contested by Muda secretary-general Ainie Haziqah Shafii. Voters here have voted for Amanah three times in a row.

Amira said the four were picked from a pool of 20 proposed candidates.

Meanwhile, on a related matter, Amira said that Muda plans to contest the Johor polls together with PSM - which she expects to field one candidate. - FMT
