MALAYSIANS are increasingly choosing destinations closer to home for short breaks and mid-year holidays, according to new data released by Airbnb.
The platform said domestic travel continues to gain momentum, with several local destinations recording significant increases in search interest among Malaysian travellers.
Kuala Terengganu emerged as the fastest-growing domestic destination, with searches by Malaysian guests rising by nearly 60% year-on-year. Kuala Lumpur and Melaka also recorded strong growth in interest for short city breaks.
Airbnb said the trend reflects a growing preference among Malaysians for convenient domestic getaways, particularly as travellers seek shorter and more flexible trips.
The data also revealed changing travel preferences among younger travellers.
While Kuala Lumpur and Selangor remain popular domestic destinations, Gen Z travellers are increasingly exploring less conventional locations.
Pangkor Island recorded more than a 20% increase in search interest among Gen Z users, while Penang and Langkawi also ranked among the group’s preferred destinations for coastal and island holidays.

Beyond Malaysia, younger travellers are increasingly looking towards destinations within the Asia-Pacific region.
Indonesia, Thailand, South Korea and Australia were among the most searched international destinations by Malaysian Gen Z travellers.
Popular cities included Bangkok, Perth, Jakarta, Ho Chi Minh City, Bandung, Busan and Melbourne, reflecting a preference for destinations offering cultural experiences, food and urban attractions.
Airbnb said the findings suggest that younger travellers are placing greater emphasis on varied experiences, while maintaining a preference for destinations that remain relatively accessible and affordable.
The platform highlighted a range of accommodation options reflecting current travel trends, including heritage properties in Melaka, beachfront stays in Terengganu, countryside retreats in Langkawi and heritage homes in Perth.
The latest data underscores the continued strength of domestic tourism, while also pointing to growing regional travel demand among younger Malaysian travellers. ‒ Focus Malaysia
