HR Ministry committed to enhancing Bangladesh worker recruitment governance, says Ramanan

PUTRAJAYA: The Human Resources Ministry will continue to strengthen the governance of foreign worker management to ensure that the process of recruiting workers from Bangladesh is carried out transparently, fairly and ethically.

Its minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan (pic) said this was in line with the commitment of Malaysia and Bangladesh to ensure the recruitment process is free from exploitation, discrimination and unethical practices.

He said this was very important given that Bangladesh is one of the main source countries of foreign workers in Malaysia in supporting the country's economic growth.

"Therefore, aspects of governance, worker welfare and ethical recruitment mechanisms need to be further strengthened for the benefit of both countries," he said in a statement shared on his Facebook page Monday (June 22).

Ramanan said cooperation in the field of human resource management with Bangladesh could not only guarantee the welfare, safety and rights of workers, but also help meet the country's workforce needs in a sustainable and responsible manner.

"The Human Resources Ministry will continue to play an active role in strengthening the governance of foreign workers and expanding strategic cooperation with partner countries including Bangladesh for mutual benefit," he said.

Earlier, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his Bangladeshi counterpart, Tarique Rahman, during a bilateral meeting agreed to establish a Joint Working Group (JWG) to ensure that the migration of workers from the country to Malaysia can continue safely and benefit both countries.

The JWG will focus on evaluating the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and laying the foundation for the drafting of a new MoU that is updated according to the current needs of both countries.

Tarique is on a two-day official visit to Malaysia at the invitation of Anwar, which is also his first official bilateral visit abroad since assuming office in February. - Bernama
