MIC deputy president M Saravanan said he was surprised that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim claimed not to have received his Aug 24 letter detailing alleged irregularities in a foreign worker recruitment scheme.
Saravanan told Malaysiakini last night that the document had been sent to the Prime Minister’s Office, Anwar’s political secretary, the prime minister’s personal email, and his personal WhatsApp number.
“In fact, the political secretary himself replied to me, saying that he had received the letter,” said the Tapah MP, who pleaded not guilty to three counts of receiving RM1.097 million in bribes to approve foreign worker quotas for a company in 2022.
“So I’m surprised and wondering what other way I can use to deliver the letter to him (Anwar).
“Surely I’m not expected to queue outside his office or house like during the late Tun Samy Vellu’s time,” he said.
Air quality deteriorated across several parts of the country today, with one area in Sarawak recording a very unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) reading due to transboundary haze.
The Department of Environment (DOE) said Sri Aman recorded an API of 221 as of 9am, placing it in the very unhealthy category.
Another 28 areas recorded unhealthy air quality, while 39 areas were at moderate levels. Among the worst-affected areas were IPD Serian at 194, Sarikei at 190, Kuching at 169, Samarahan at 168, and Mukah at 165.
Outside Sarawak, Sungai Petani and Sibu both recorded API readings of 161, while Minden in Penang and Cheras in Kuala Lumpur recorded 160.
Other areas with unhealthy readings included Langkawi, Seberang Perai, Seberang Jaya, Kangar, Alor Setar, Taiping, Batu Muda, Tanjung Malim, Shah Alam, Putrajaya, Johan Setia, Nilai and Tasek Ipoh.
Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng has questioned a perceived double standard in how police handle cases involving the improper display of the Jalur Gemilang.
In a statement, the DAP lawmaker said ordinary members of the public appeared to face harsher treatment than political figures or government agencies over similar incidents.
Lim Lip Eng He cited the case in Kulai, Johor, where a 34-year-old local woman and a 48-year-old Nepali security guard were arrested after the Jalur Gemilang and Johor flag were displayed upside down at a factory in the Indahpura industrial area.
Lim contrasted this with an incident at the Perak MCA headquarters in Ipoh yesterday, where the Malaysian and Perak flags were displayed incorrectly but later corrected without further arrests, after Perak MCA chairperson Mah Hang Soon apologised.
Jelutong MP RSN Rayer has accused Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh of adopting a less confrontational approach to the latest Jalur Gemilang controversy involving Perak MCA compared to a similar incident in Penang last year.
Rayer questioned whether Akmal’s response depended on the political affiliation of those involved.
RSN Rayer “For once, Malaysians have been given the privilege of witnessing the ‘new and improved’ Akmal Salleh - calm, measured, restrained and apparently mature in responding to the Malaysian flag being displayed upside-down by Perak MCA.
“What a remarkable and commendable transformation of character,” the DAP lawmaker said.
Responding to the Perak MCA’s apology, Akmal called for further action, including for laws and penalties involving deliberate disrespect of the national flag to be strengthened.
Pakatan Harapan has appointed Stulang assemblyperson Chen Kah Eng as Johor opposition leader, a post he also held before the state assembly was dissolved on June 1, Bernama reported.
Chen Kah Eng Johor DAP chief Teo Nie Ching said DAP proposed Chen’s appointment and PKR and Amanah unanimously accepted it.
BN formed the Johor government after winning 48 seats in the July 11 state election, while Harapan secured eight.
Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching has denied allegations on social media linking her to gang-related activities in Johor and a road accident under police investigation.
Bernama reported the Johor DAP chairperson as saying that newly created social media accounts had circulated photographs of her with certain individuals to support the allegations.
Teo Nie Ching “I have been in politics for 18 years and have served as an MP for 13 years. There may have been occasions when I met someone once or twice, or perhaps had photographs taken with someone in an ordinary social setting.
“However, to claim that I was involved in such activities is a false accusation because they merely showed photographs of me with someone, when it was simply a normal social activity.
“The police, including the Johor police chief, have already held a press conference and announced that 13 suspects had been arrested. I welcome a thorough investigation by the police,” she said. - Mkini
