Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said his party did not accept having members who issued statements that insulted the death of Balakong lawmaker Eddie Ng.
"Although we are of different religions and different political allegiances, in the case of (Ng's) death, we should not perpetuate hate.
"Umno cannot accept (that its) members issue statements meant to insult (the deceased) even though (Ng) may have made mistakes by saying the wrong things," said Zahid in a statement today.
Zahid's statement follows widespread condemnation against Seputeh Umno Youth vice-chief Razlan Rafii who posted on Twitter that Ng was someone who was vile-hearted and liked to "slander".
Among those who criticised Razlan for his tweet were his Umno and BN colleagues. Zahid's statement did not mention Razlan by name.
Several hours after posting the tweet, Razlan deleted it and apologised to Ng's family.
Ng, a two-term assemblyperson and father of three, died early this morning in a car accident. - Mkini
