PKR president Anwar Ibrahim has reminded those who imply he is parachuting into Perak by contesting the Tambun MP seat that he lived in the state for nine years, including a two-year spell under detention at Kamunting.
This was in response to a short video clip in which incumbent Tambun MP Ahmad Faizal Azumu "welcomed" Anwar's challenge for the Tambun seat with a reminder on how to speak the local dialect.
“I am a Perak man of nine years, don’t you forget," said Anwar at Harapan’s mega tour event in Alor Gajah last night.
"I spent seven years studying at secondary school in Kuala Kangsar. And I also served two years detention at Kamunting under ISA," the incumbent Port Dickson MP reminded his audience.
Anwar, who was born in Bukit Mertajam in 1947, undertook his secondary education at the Malay College, Kuala Kangsar in the 1960s and was detained for nearly two years after being arrested as a student leader in 1974 for leading protests against rural poverty and hunger.
"So I worked diligently for nine years, I didn't go anywhere since I was in Perak, I didn't go out for those nine years," said Anwar, who served as MP for Permatang Pauh from 1982 to 1999 and again from 2008 to 2015.
Anwar was responding to Bersatu deputy president Faizal who said in his video that the pronunciation of air (water) in the Perak dialect is ayor and not ayaq like in Penang.
"Those who are planning to move to Tambun, here is my advice.
"In Tambun, we say ayor. Listen carefully. Ayor. Not ayaq. Thank you," he said in the short video.
Anwar's move to contest in Tambun is part of Pakatan Harapan's strategy to make Perak a frontline state in the upcoming general election. The seat was won by Azumu in 2018, although he was then contesting under a Harapan ticket. - Mkini
