DAP reshuffle: Bee Yin, Hong Pin, Gobind to contest in new seats

Pahang isn't the only state where DAP is reshuffling its candidates, with new arrangements being made in Selangor and Johor.

Malaysiakini learnt that DAP central committee member Tan Hong Pin will not follow the original arrangement to contest in Labis but will run in Bakri, the only Chinese majority seat in Johor.

Meanwhile, Labis incumbent Pang Hok Liong is expected to defend his seat, a non-Malay-majority constituency with 43.5 percent Chinese and 15.3 percent Indian voters.

With a new face in Bakri, the seat's incumbent Yeo Bee Yin is expected to return to her political starting point, Selangor, and is likely to take the Puchong seat.

Selangor DAP chief Gobind Singh is believed to be leaving Puchong - a seat he held for three terms - to contest in Damansara.

It is learnt that Damansara incumbent Tony Pua will take a rest from electoral politics and not participate in the 15th general election.

Announcement at fundraising dinner

When contacted, Tan told Malaysiakini that the candidate for Bakri has not been finalised but that it was possible he might contest there.

Pang, meanwhile, refused to reveal whether he would be defending Labis.

However, he said he would be attending a DAP fundraising dinner in Muar this Thursday.

It is believed that Labis, Bakri and Ayer Hitam candidates would be announced at the event.

Johor DAP vice-chairperson Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali is expected to be the candidate for Ayer Hitam.

Previously, Sheikh Umar was frequently spotted in Bakri and was reported as one of the potential candidates for the seat.

However, Yeo later clarified that Sheikh Umar was only assisting her in Bakri.

In 2018, DAP sent Liew Chin Tong to Ayer Hitam in an attempt to wrest the seat from MCA chief Wee Ka Siong.

Liew narrowly lost the seat by 303 votes. - Mkini
