PETALING JAYA: Former national unity minister P Waytha Moorthy has announced his support for Barisan Nasional ahead of the 15th general election (GE15).

Waytha, who heads the Malaysian Advancement Party (MAP), told FMT he wanted to complete his mission of helping poor and downtrodden Indians.

“I have waited long enough for Pakatan Harapan’s response to my request to join their coalition,” he said, adding that he had waited for a response for two years.

“Silence from Pakatan Harapan is not an option for me. I take it Anwar Ibrahim does not want any cooperation from me. I respect his decision and have to move on for the sake of the community that I represent.”

Waytha, a member of the Pakatan Harapan-led government, said he had “unfinished business” and wanted to ensure the Indian community were part of the mainstream economy and civil service.

“My mission is to provide and create opportunities for the youths both within the government and the private sector.

“My mission is to address the hardcore poverty that affects a large percentage of the community.”

He also said he wanted to ensure young Indians, particularly school dropouts, received training and had alternatives to develop their skills and earning capacity.

Waytha, a key mover of the Hindraf rally in 2007, said he had already formulated a plan to solve the community’s problems once and for all.

“It is important that anyone who becomes prime minister understands the unique issues faced by the Indian community.

“What matters to me is supporting a prime minister who would assist me in building up our community and fulfil my life’s journey and mission.”

Waytha said he had met with Barisan Nasional chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

“He is supportive of my initiatives and plans for the Indian community. Hence MAP and I will support BN under the leadership of Datuk Seri Zahid.” - FMT
