A residents’ association has appealed to Kuala Lumpur mayor Maimunah Sharif to provide a freehold land title for the site of the Taman Tugu public park in the Lake Gardens.

The Kuala Lumpur Residents Action for Sustainable Development Association said the 26ha site is currently on a 99-year leasehold.

Calling for the leasehold to be converted to freehold, the group said: “We want this heritage to be preserved for the future generation of city dwellers.”

In a statement after a meeting with the mayor on Oct 29, the group said it had appealed to the KL City Hall (DBKL) to improve the process of gazetting of land titles and land use. City authorities should be more transparent and involve residents “so we can evaluate the grounds for the gazettement”.

The association also discussed protection of public land and green lungs and the challenges faced by redevelopment projects.

Association members also said residents have encountered people claiming to represent developers seeking the residents’ signatures on forms consenting to redevelopment projects.
