KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (BN-Ayer Hitam) stated that the Statistics Department (DOSM) data seemed "too good to be true," adding that the prices of goods continued to rise and did not reflect reality.
“When we mention a 1.9% inflation rate, you should try asking the people if the price of Roti John or Murtabak has risen in price or not? I must humbly admit it has gone up,” he told the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday (Nov 6).
“Whether we accept it or not, the truth is there. What is the reason? Logistic costs 6% last year even though F&B did not increase by 8%, but it is because SST continues to be used.
“I’m not saying the government does not need to rationalise subsidies; I understand the constraints faced by the government,” he said.
Dr Wee proposed that the government levy vehicles based on their value, adding that as the people’s spokesman, he would look for practical solutions.
He was responding to Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli, who said the increase in food prices had been under control while winding up his ministerial speech on the Supply Bill 2025.
Rafizi said the government of the day had been the most successful in controlling the price increase of food and beverages since 2011.
He said the only time the hike was lower than current levels was between July 2018 to May 2019 due to the GST being abolished. - Star
