'Focus on unity', PM sidesteps questions on Rafizi

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has declined to comment on whether PKR will move to sack Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli from the party.

Speaking to reporters at Wisma MCA, Anwar, who is also PKR president, instead urged that focus be given to unity in the spirit of the day’s celebrations.

“We are discussing Chinese New Year - extending wishes of hope, progress, for the people, and unity.

“Today is a day that should focus on the spirit of togetherness. Chinese New Year - Gong Xi Fa CaiXin Nian Kuai Le. That’s what matters right now,” he said after attending MCA’s annual Chinese New Year celebration hosted by party president Wee Ka Siong.

“Don’t get caught up in other matters; those can wait. Be patient.

“It’s better to focus today on the spirit of the people and unity,” said Anwar when directly asked to respond to Rafizi’s remarks on a recent episode of the “Yang Berhenti Menteri” podcast.

Previously, the former PKR deputy president had targeted Anwar’s remarks at the Selangor PKR Convention earlier this month, in which the latter said the party has no room for any leader or member who only knows how to whine and nag.

“If you don’t want to listen and are already telling me to leave the party because you can’t stand the criticism, then just sack me. What’s so difficult?” said Rafizi.

On Sunday, the former economy minister joined hundreds who took to the streets in Kuala Lumpur to demand the resignation of MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki.

This follows the shareholding scandal and allegations that MACC officers colluded with private individuals to strong-arm business rivals and abetted corporate takeovers, as exposed by Bloomberg.

‘Spirit of unity’

Earlier, Anwar, in his speech, said he believes that the Chinese New Year, celebrated with various races, accentuates the spirit of unity among Malaysians.

"I came to celebrate the Chinese New Year organised by MCA, and this is not just for one group, but a celebration for all Malaysians.

"It is joyously celebrated and reflects our unity,” he said at the event, according to Bernama.

Anwar added that the celebration of the Year of the Horse signifies strength and energy that will hopefully drive economic growth and national development.

"I hope the Year of the Fire Horse will spur more dynamic and vigorous growth.

“The horse symbolises swiftness, tremendous strength and energy, and hopefully Malaysia's economic performance and development will be way better this year,” he added.

Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, former MCA president Tan Koon Swan, and China's Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing. - Mkini
