IPOH: Reports of loud, unexplained booming sounds resurfaced in parts of Ipoh and several surrounding districts, including Kampar, Tapah and Teluk Intan, in the early hours today.

The sounds, reportedly heard between about 11.50pm last night and early today morning, were widely discussed in viral posts and comments on Facebook.

A similar incident was reported in the same areas on June 18 last year, the cause of which has yet to be determined.

Perak Mineral and Geoscience Department (JMG) director Nizarulikram Abdul Rahim said the department had not received any official complaints related to the alleged incident as of noon today.

He said that although the reports were based on social media posts rather than formal complaints, the department had conducted checks with relevant agencies, including the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

Preliminary findings, he said, ruled out quarry blasting and seismic events as possible causes of the sound.

"Quarry blasting is only permitted between noon and 5pm from Monday to Friday.

"Since the reported incident occurred around midnight or in the early morning, it could not have originated from quarry operations," he said when contacted today.

He added that MetMalaysia's seismic monitoring instruments also did not detect any activity that could have caused ground vibrations in Ipoh or Kampar.

One Facebook user, identified as Nur Khaleisah, claimed she heard the loud bang in Kampar, adding that the impact was strong enough to shake the sliding door of her house.

On June 27 last year, Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said a mysterious loud explosion and tremors shook parts of Ipoh on June 18, but the cause remains unknown.

Saarani said investigations were ongoing, but no concrete findings have emerged.

He added that the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the police as it involves state security.

Perak JMG also noted that similar unexplained booming sounds had been reported in Ipoh in 2012, 2018, and 2024.

The department confirmed that those incidents were not linked to quarry explosions, bomb tests, or sonic booms from military aircraft. - NST
