Over 2,000 evacuated as floods hit Kota Marudu, Pitas

KOTA KINABALU: A total of 2,181 flood victims were evacuated to several temporary relief centres (PPS) in Kota Marudu and Pitas as of early this evening.

The figure was based on reports by the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) and the Secretariat of the District Disaster Management Committee (JPBD), which compiled data on flood victims at relief centres in both districts.

Of the total, 1,401 victims were recorded at three relief centres in Kota Marudu, while 780 were placed at five centres in Pitas.

In Kota Marudu, Sekolah Kebangsaan Taritipan relief centre recorded the highest number of evacuees at 815, followed by Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tandek (296) and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tandek II (290).

In Pitas, Dewan Majlis Daerah relief centre recorded the highest number of evacuees at 365, followed by Sekolah Kebangsaan Salimpodon Darat (145), Dewan Kusilad (129), Sekolah Kebangsaan Rukom Ulu (78) and Dewan Kebatasan (63).

Meanwhile, APM reported that eight villages in Kota Marudu were affected by floods, namely Beliajung, Boruol (Damai), Tandek, Marasinsim, Morion, Sasayapon, Rasak Laut and Asin-Asin.

Pitas recorded the highest number of affected villages so far, with 30 inundated, while 18 villages were reported to be cut off.

The affected villages in Pitas were Kesagaan Rukom Ulu, Salimpodon Laut, Salimpodon Darat, Kelumpang, Linggisan, Mantus Darat, Bilangau Besar, Gorib, Tambilidon, Luntuk, Marasimsim Laut, Kambau, Gailun, Pinggan-Pinggan, Pondoi, Sinasak Senaja, Gusung, Kalipuon, Kemiri, Kedayan, Desa Seberang, Bawang, Saab Darat, Kusilad, Sibaung, Kanibongan, Mendamai Bai and Sosop Bai.

The villages cut off were Nunguh Mandurian Ulu, Sanitan Laut, Nibang, Mangkabusu, Kodundung Bersatu, Narandang Laut, Narandang Darat, Manduring, Botung, Ampungoi, Masin Besar, Simpang Empat, Simpang, Sulakolung, Layung, Pandan Mendamai and Mandurian.

The floods, triggered by continuous rain since yesterday, also caused several landslides and submerged dozens of road stretches as of today. - NST
