PUTRAJAYA: The Education Ministry has outlined four strategies to manage a double intake of Year One pupils in 2027, involving children aged six and seven.
Education director-general Datuk Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad said the measures include increasing the number of teachers and classrooms, redistributing pupils from high-density schools to other locations, and implementing double-shift sessions.
He said these strategies were developed based on registration timelines and school density analyses nationwide.
"The addition of teachers and classrooms will focus on high-demand schools.
"The ministry is working to increase the number of teachers based on existing and additional projections.
"Priority will be given to candidates with degrees and professional qualifications, whether from the open market or the reserve pool," he told Utusan Malaysia.
He added that candidates without professional qualifications would be appointed under a Contract of Service (CoS) and required to complete professional education courses.
Yesterday, Azam said no quotas have been set for six-year-olds entering Year One for the 2027 session, as the government's principle is to accept pupils based on parents' confidence in their child's readiness.
"Since registrations opened last Sunday, applications for six-year-olds have been encouraging, involving 31,809 children. This is alongside 196,284 seven-year-olds, bringing the total to 228,110."
He said the ministry would also move students from overcrowded schools to those with lower enrolment.
The strategy considers the timeline from the opening of applications until the school term begins on Jan 4, 2027.
"Through the registration process, the ministry can plan to add classrooms or teachers at high-demand schools. To quickly increase classroom capacity, we will build classrooms using the Industrialised Building System (IBS). This includes using cabins that meet conducive classroom standards and converting special rooms into classrooms," he said.
Meanwhile, Azam said the ministry is in the phase of rolling out the 2027 School Curriculum for Year One and Form One starting next year.
He said textbook content for affected students would be adapted to the new curriculum and future knowledge and skill requirements. The new curriculum for preschools and special education preschools began this year.
"During this period, we held engagement sessions through the Pakat Programme to brief stakeholders, including teachers, parents, and private kindergarten operators. However, there are no specific textbooks for the new preschool and special education curriculum. Learning at the preschool level is theme-based rather than subject-based," he said.
He explained that preschool learning is based on real-world experiences, with teachers given the autonomy to develop and select materials to assist the teaching and learning process. - NST
