Wan Fayhsal withdraws appeal against Bersatu suspension

Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal has withdrawn his appeal for Bersatu to reconsider the suspension of his party membership.

In a statement on social media, Wan Fayhsal thanked the Bersatu board of appeal for its professionalism.

"However, like many former leaders who have been sacked recently, I will not be making any new appeals and will instead withdraw my old appeals from reconsideration," he said today.

A copy of the letter attached to his post indicated that the decision was driven by his loss of confidence in Bersatu’s goals and the party’s weaknesses in implementing good governance practices.

The letter, dated Feb 16, was addressed to Bersatu appeals board chairperson Azhar Azizan Harun.

Wan Fayhsal was suspended from Bersatu for one term in October last year and was among 17 members dismissed by the party’s disciplinary board last Friday.

He joins former Bersatu supreme council members Wan Saiful Wan Jan and Saifuddin Abdullah, both of whom earlier retracted appeals against their dismissal.

Wan Saiful said Bersatu has no future and expressed his belief that the party had strayed from its original path, blaming Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin and party secretary-general Azmin Ali for the problem.

The expulsions from Bersatu came at the height of a power struggle between party president Muhyiddin Yassin and his deputy Hamzah Zainudin, which plunged the party into a months-long factional crisis.

Many of those sacked from the party were perceived as aligned with Hamzah.

During Bersatu's annual general meeting in September last year, several delegates had openly called for Muhyiddin to resign, fuelling speculation of a move to replace him with Hamzah through statutory declarations. - Mkini
