Bersatu dismisses division dissolutions, insists all intact

Bersatu has dismissed announcements that several of its divisions have been dissolved, calling the allegations baseless and unconstitutional.

In a statement, its secretary-general Azmin Ali said the dissolution announcements are in direct conflict with several provisions of the party constitution and standing orders.

He stressed that the party's founding document does not vest any member, including a division chief, with the authority to dissolve a division unilaterally.

He added that the four divisions which announced their dissolution recently are also intact.

"The headquarters has received reports that several social media posts and press statements have claimed that Bersatu divisions in Larut, Lembah Pantai, Kepala Batas, and Tanjong have been dissolved following the resignation of several division committee members.

"These claims are wholly without basis and unconstitutional, and are in direct conflict with several provisions of Bersatu's constitution and standing orders. The party's constitution does not vest any party member, including a division chief, with the authority to dissolve a division," Azmin (above) said.

He also labelled the situation as a "desperate act by a small number of individuals with malicious intent", and accused them of seeking to damage the image and dignity of Bersatu and to destabilise it.

Azmin said the supreme leadership council meeting on Feb 14 had taken proactive measures by mandating state leaderships to monitor each division, and identify decisive steps to restore order in problematic divisions, as part of an ongoing effort to strengthen Bersatu at all levels.

"In this regard, I wish to confirm that Bersatu divisions in Larut, Lembah Pantai, Kepala Batas, and Tanjong remain in existence in accordance with Bersatu's constitution, and the supreme leadership council will take further action pursuant to the existing provisions of the constitution.

"I am confident that Bersatu today is ever more mature and steadfast, and will move forward with renewed conviction in advancing the aspirations of the people," Azmin added.

Mass exodus

Last week, Bersatu deputy president Hamzah Zainudin, along with 16 other party leaders and lawmakers, were sacked from the party by its disciplinary council.

Since the incident, Bersatu has seen a mass exodus of party grassroots leaders and members, who announced their loss of confidence in their president, Muhyiddin Yassin.

A slew of Bersatu divisions and branches were also said to have dissolved following the departure of their office bearers.

According to information shared by sources aligned to Hamzah's camp, at least seven Bersatu divisions and two Bersatu wing divisions have allegedly dissolved so far.

This had sent Muhyiddin loyalists scrambling to do firefighting, including denying that party leaders at the division level have the authority to decide on dissolution. - Mkini
