'Dakwah' tents taken down for blocking footpaths - DBKL

The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has clarified that its officers removed Multiracial Reverted Muslims' (MRM) tents for violating regulations on obstructing pedestrian walkways.

Before the removal, DBKL officers had waited over 30 minutes at the location at Jalan Bukit Bintang for an explanation, but nobody came forward, it said in a statement today.

"DBKL took action to take down the tents and move related materials for storage purposes in accordance with legal provisions and by-laws in force.

"Throughout the implementation of the action, the responsible party was still not present to provide an explanation," it asserted.

It stressed that it has never prohibited public proselytisation (dakwah), and that the enforcement action was intended to maintain the safe use of urban spaces.

DBKL's management will soon hold a meeting with MRM to discuss a long-term solution as well as to prevent the recurrence of such incidents, it added.

Earlier today, Arau MP Shahidan Kassim questioned DBKL's confiscation of MRM's items.

"Is this part of the new mayor's policy? If so, please provide a clear explanation and space for discussion to find a better solution," the PAS lawmaker said in a post on social media.

He also tagged independent preacher Firdaus Wong, who is the founder of MRM.

‘No notice’

Yesterday, Firdaus claimed that his party did not receive any summons notice or inventory list regarding details of the seizure and offences committed.

"We do not know where the items are stored and how to make a claim because no documents were given to us," he told Sinar Harian.

He claimed that 12 officers had seized canopies, wagons, and propaganda materials during the event yesterday.

MRM had been carrying out such activities for 14 years now and has never been informed of any need to seek a permit, he added.

"We have asked if we need a permit and so on, but (DBKL officers) said we do not need a permit because we do not disrupt traffic and we do not make sales," he said. - Mkini
