'Return home,' Umno tells Johor Bersatu members after 11 divisions dissolved

A Johor Umno division leader has invited Bersatu members affected by the dissolution of 11 divisions in the state to join Umno, describing the development as proof that Malay political strength cannot be built on division.

In a statement today, Johor Bahru Umno chief Yahya Jaafar said the disbandment – which includes the Johor Bahru division – should serve as a lesson that political stability and unity are crucial in safeguarding Malay interests.

“Malay political strength cannot be built on fragmentation. It must be founded on unity and stability,” he said.

Yahya (above) urged Bersatu members involved in the internal turmoil to “return to the roots of the struggle” and rejoin what he described as the original platform of Malay political leadership.

“As the political landscape becomes increasingly challenging, we cannot afford to remain divided in small groups that weaken our voice and influence,” he added.

Yahya said the call was in line with the “Rumah Bangsa” concept introduced by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, aimed at consolidating Malay political strength under a single, stable umbrella.

Yesterday, 11 divisions in Johor dissolved as a group, namely Pontian, Simpang Renggam, Sembrong, Mersing, Johor Bahru, Pengerang, Labis, Tanjung Piai, Seri Gading, Ledang and Pulai. Later, the Dungun division in Terengganu followed suit.

Group spokesperson Isa Ab Hamid, who was also Pontian Bersatu division chief, said the move came after more than half of each division’s committee members resigned.

Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali, however, dismissed such “unconstitutional” dissolution announcements.

‘Stability key to Johor’s progress’

Touching on Johor’s political landscape, Yahya credited the state’s stability to the leadership of Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi, saying it had enabled Johor to continue recording encouraging achievements.

He cited improvements in investment inflows, job creation, fiscal management and investor confidence as among the state’s accomplishments.

“Set aside minor differences, reject divisive politics, and prioritise the larger development agenda for the state,” he said.

Yahya added that the time had come to strengthen Malay unity and preserve Johor’s stability to ensure a more prosperous and competitive future for the state. - Mkini
