Ramadan is the name of the month in which Muslims are required to fast. In Malaysia, tomorrow, Thursday, 19 February 2026 is the 1st day of Ramadan.
Allah has commanded Muslims to fast in the month of Ramadan.
He has said that fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those who came before you so that you develop discipline/piety. It's Islamic boot camp for giving up all the sinful things we take for granted and immersing ourselves in all the blessed things that we don't do enough of.
In accordance with the verses of the Qur'an and some reliable Hadiths, the following are some of the benefits of fasting in the month of Ramadan:
- Attaining consciousness of God (Taqwa): In accordance with the Quranic report (i.e. Qur'an 2: 183), fasting in the month of Ramadan will infuse in its observers the consciousness of God. A quality which is necessary for gaining proximity to God and for attaining the salvation in this world and in the Hereafter.
- Purification of hearts and insight: Fasting in the month of Ramadan, according to some Hadiths purifies the hearts and enhances the insights of its observers.
- Overcoming whims: Fasting in the month of Ramadan is a whole month training program which allows its observers to have control over their whims.
- Self reformation: Fasting in the month of Ramadan is an avenue for self reformation and self transformation. For the fact that fasting is not just renunciation of food and drinks, it is also renunciation of all bad and sinful acts.
- Appreciating the blessings of God: Fasting in the month of Ramadan is an avenue for the rich and well-to-do individuals to appreciate the blessings of God in their possession and to understand the conditions of the poor and less privileged individuals in the society.
