KUALA LUMPUR: The People's Progressive Party (PPP) has urged police to take immediate action against independent preacher Zamri Vinoth to prevent further racial or religious provocation.
PPP president Datuk Loga Bala Mohan said while the party welcomed the Home Ministry's decision to stop the planned rally, it was pressing for firm action against Zamri.
"Action against Zamri is long overdue as the individual had repeatedly touched on sensitive race, religion and royalty (3R) issues.
"The police must not hesitate to take firm and decisive action against him before he undermines peace and unity in this country," he said in a statement.
Loga said that despite thousands of police reports lodged against him for continuously provoking sensitive issues, no charges have been brought against him so far.
"The law is very clear, yet no action has been taken. This raises serious questions as to why he appears to be immune and untouchable.
"PPP urges the Home Ministry to take stern action immediately without fear or favour. Selective enforcement will only weaken public confidence in the rule of law and embolden extremist behaviour," he said.
He also said that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim must be firm and decisive in dealing with individuals who threaten the peace and harmony of our nation.
"PPP also commends the Home Ministry for its timely decision to stop the rally, which coincided with the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi today.
"This decision has effectively saved the day and prevented potential damage to Malaysia's international reputation.
Loga added that such actions also undermine constructive partnerships and may scare away potential investors, resulting in significant economic losses to the country.
"It could also negatively affect the Ringgit, which has recently shown signs of strengthening," he said.
It was reported that Zamri had called for a rally against allegedly illegally built houses of worship to proceed in an area near a shopping complex.
This follows the Home Ministry's statement that the police will meet the rally organisers to urge them to call off the protest in view of the visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi today. - NST
