PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today took statements from an independent preacher and a financial officer of a Kedah-based educational and missionary institution over alleged fund misappropriation.

Sources said both suspects were at MACC headquarters from about 1.30pm to give information and help with the ongoing investigation.

"The focus now is on finalising the investigation," a source said, adding that the questioning was part of follow-up inquiries after earlier remand proceedings.

Both suspects were released from remand at about 5pm yesterday, after being detained again last Friday to facilitate investigations into the case.

When contacted, MACC's Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Division director Datuk Norhaizam Muhammad confirmed the matter.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLATFPUAA 2001).

Norhaizam added that both individuals were expected to be released later tonight, with investigations to resume tomorrow.

Earlier it was reported that both had been rearrested on Feb 9 over alleged misappropriation of RM1.3 million.

In the initial case, the duo allegedly abused their positions to approve a RM600,000 payment for fund-collecting purposes without the consent of other partners.

The new investigation involves the alleged embezzlement of RM1.3 million, which was reportedly deposited into the preacher's personal account. Investigations also revealed they allegedly approved a RM500,000 payment for a house purchase. - NST
