In a hot weather spell, it's essential to focus on hydrating foods like fruits and vegetables, light meals such as salads, and refreshing beverages like smoothies or infused water to stay cool and nourished. Additionally, opting for smaller, more frequent meals can help maintain energy levels without feeling too heavy in the heat.
I have experienced lots of very hot weather, and here are some things you must watch out for.
1) Don't do too much heavy exercise. Be lazy. If you start to feel too hot and bothered, go and rest in the shade. If you start feeling a bit headachy, or grumpy, or "head-spinny" you are experienced the early stages of heat-related illness, a potentially fatal condition. So go and rest in the shade and cool down.
2) Try to stay out of the sun as much as possible. If you have to walk somewhere, you can stroll from patch of shade to patch of shade.
3) Beware of hats, long sleeves, and long trousers. Hats, trousers, and long sleeves will keep the sun off your skin, but will stop the wind blowing on your sweat and cooling you down. Hats and long sleeves can be very useful if you can be very inactive, but if you actually have to perform some kind of activity, exposed sweaty skin will be cooled by the wind. Feel free to remove your shirt. But watch for sunburn. Pink people can get sunburn in 15 minutes, allegedly. Again, monitor your moods and feelings.
3) Drink water. There are all sorts of ridiculous people who believe that one should drink 8 glasses of water in a normal day. I expect that these people spend a lot of time urinating. But when the weather gets very hot (which can be above 40 degrees C) strolling gently, staying in the shade, and carrying and drinking water will be much more comfortable. When living in the big towns or cities in Malaysia, I had to walk a few km to the centre of town or cities in 33+ degree temperatures during the hot weather spell. I would carry a 2 litre water container, and stroll from patch of shade to patch of shade. By the time I got to the middle of town, the water container was often empty.
4) Go shopping. In Malaysia, not all shopping malls are air-conditioned, so you cannot go in and aimless walking around to cool down.
I am, by nature, a cold weather person, and heat is something I have to be careful about. So all of the above tricks are things I have spent my life doing.
I mostly eat/drink to avoid the heat on a hot weather spell are 👇
- Watermelon
- Mango
- Coconut
- Litchi
- Cucumber
- Water
- Less spicy food
- Seasonal vegetables
- Seasonal fruits
