Akmal urges Madani to reintroduce GST and call it Madani tax

UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh satirised Madani Mart’s launch, which he says is reminiscent of the Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia (KR1M), while he urges the unity government to revive  goods and services tax (GST) and call it Madani tax.

Akmal reminded Malaysians that when they were in the opposition, Pakatan Harapan had criticised the KR1M idea, only to implement it under a different brand when they were in power.

“Congratulations to the BN government, whose good ideas and policies are being continued today, even though they were once condemned.

“Next, I urge the government to reinstate GST for the benefit of the national economy – perhaps even rename it as the Madani tax,” he said in a statement on Friday (April 3).

Akmal also said the UMNO Youth will continue to support any initiative that benefits the people’s economy.

“What is good, we will support. Alhamdulillah. Previously, we had KR1M, but the opposition condemned it.

“Now that same opposition has become the government and has introduced the very bright idea of opening Madani Mart,” he said.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim opened the very first Madani Mart at Indera Mahkota 8 yesterday (April 3).

The store is part of the Madani government’s initiative to help alleviate the burden of rising living expenses and support the well-being of families nationwide.

The government also denied claims that Madani Mart copied KR1M.

Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh said that the implementation of Madani Mart is not a copy of previous government retail models.

She explained that Madani Mart adopts a new approach without involving government capital expenditure.

This model differs from earlier initiatives, rejecting claims that Madani Mart is simply “wearing the same clothes” as KR1M. —  Focus Malaysia
