PETALING JAYA:
Transport minister Loke Siew Fook has instructed the land public transport agency (Apad) and the road transport department (JPJ) to immediately audit the company that owns the trailer involved in a crash in Segamat, Johor, which claimed three lives.

In a Facebook post today, Loke said he met the families of the two people who survived the crash and are being treated at Segamat Hospital.

One of them is in critical condition and has been placed in the ICU.

Loke also provided financial assistance to help cover medical costs and ease the burden on the victims’ families.

He hoped police will expedite their investigation into the case and that the driver of the trailer, who tested positive for drugs, will be charged in court promptly.

“I am confident the Attorney-General’s Chambers will pursue charges that reflect the severity of the offence,” he said.

“I have also instructed JPJ and Apad to audit and investigate the company that operates the trailer. The company must be held accountable.”

Loke said that while the vast majority of lorry drivers are professional and responsible, a small number are involved in drug abuse.

He reminded all drivers not to operate vehicles while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, warning that such action will endanger not only themselves but also other road users.

Yesterday, media reports said three members of a family were killed in a van-trailer collision in Segamat, which occurred just 200m from their home.

The dead were identified as K Myakrishnan, 71, his wife, S Sevendai, 65, and van driver S Palamiandy, 75.

Two other victims, aged 18 and 22, were injured and taken to Hospital Segamat.

The 29-year-old trailer driver tested positive for methamphetamine and has been remanded for four days, according to New Straits Times. - FMT
