KULAI: A couple's attempt to avoid their parents' reprimands ended in a brush with Johor Islamic Religious Department (Jainj) authorities after they were detained for alleged khalwat at a hotel in Kulai.
The unmarried pair, both working adults, said they had checked into the room after returning late from a friend's Hari Raya open house, fearing repercussions from their families.
Jainj enforcement officers, however, were unconvinced.
In a statement, the department said the couple were detained during a routine inspection at 9.30am. Officers knocked on the hotel room door, which was opened five minutes later by a man in his 20s.
Upon entering, the officers found the bathroom door shut and received no response when asking who was inside. After repeated knocks, a woman eventually answered.
A female officer who entered the bathroom discovered a woman in her 30s wrapped only in a towel.
Further checks confirmed that the pair were neither married nor related.
Jainj said the couple admitted to entering the room together around midnight after attending the Hari Raya open house.
"They claimed they could not return home in time and feared being scolded by their parents. The woman had informed her family she would be staying at a friend's house," the statement said.
The couple also told authorities they intended to marry but had yet to undertake any formal processes, including engagement or official application.
Both were detained under Section 27 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Johor) Enactment 1997 for khalwat. - NST
