Ronnie Liu questions Azam's presence at NFCC advisory board meeting

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Selangor executive councillor Ronnie Liu has questioned the presence of former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki at a National Financial Crime Prevention Centre (NFCC) advisory board meeting.

Liu's remarks followed a post on the Attorney-General's Chambers' (A-GC) official Facebook page, which featured photographs of Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar chairing the NFCC advisory board meeting with Azam in attendance.

According to the A-GC's post, the meeting focused on financial crime prevention initiatives and strategic inter-agency cooperation aimed at improving the country's fight against financial crimes.

Expressing his concern, Liu questioned Azam's involvement on the advisory board given Azam's past controversies.

"Azam has been appointed as an NFCC advisory board member, what is going on?

"What has happened to the so-called internal investigation and the report?

"Why is there no Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into Azam Baki and the corporate mafia?" Liu asked on his Facebook page today.

The controversy surrounding MACC and Azam originally arose in February following a Bloomberg report in February alleging that Azam held millions of shares in a financial-services company.

In response to those allegations, a three-member task force led by Dusuki was established to investigate Azam's past shareholdings in a financial-services company.

Today, several members of parliament called the government to publicly disclose the findings of the investigation into Azam's past shareholdings.

At a joint press conference today, Subang MP Wong Chen urged the government to release the outcome of the probe, arguing that Azam's retirement in May should not bring the matter to a close.

Wong's stance was supported by fellow PKR lawmakers Hassan Abdul Karim (Pasir Gudang) and Kesavan Subramaniam (Sungai Siput), alongside Ampang MP Rodziah Ismail and Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung.

There were also allegations that the MACC had assisted a group of businessmen in an attempt to take hostile control of public-listed companies—referred to as the "corporate mafia" scandal.

Both Azam and the anti-graft commission have denied the accusations.

Azam subsequently retired as the MACC chief commissioner on May 13 after his contract was not extended.

Additionally, a coalition of 51 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) yesterday submitted a memorandum to Parliament calling for an RCI into the "corporate mafia" scandal.

The RCINOW secretariat suggested that the proposed inquiry be led by former Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, alongside other esteemed members of the judiciary, academia, and civil society, to ensure absolute impartiality. - NST
