KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has crippled a syndicate allegedly involved in illegally importing frozen chicken from China into Sabah.

The syndicate is believed to have bribed enforcement officers at a port in the state to bring in the frozen chicken.

Sources said 10 containers of frozen chicken were seized during "Op Chick", an operation carried out by the MACC Intelligence Division in collaboration with the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (MCBA) and the Customs Department this morning.

"Preliminary investigations found that the containers carrying the frozen chicken had been falsely declared and did not undergo the required inspection process.

"Following the operation, MACC arrested three men in their 30s to 50s who acted as forwarding agents and a company manager.

"MACC is also identifying other individuals involved," the source said.

MACC chief commissioner Datuk Seri Abd Halim Aman, when contacted, confirmed the operation and arrests.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 17 of the MACC Act 2009.

Abd Halim said the three suspects would be brought to the Kota Kinabalu Magistrate's Court tomorrow for a remand application to facilitate investigations. - NST
