Police have stepped up security along the Malaysia-Thailand border following more than 50 bombings, arson attacks on local government offices and tyre-burning reported in three provinces of southern Thailand last Saturday.
Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail also urged the public to stay away from the conflict zones, citing safety concerns amid the escalating tension.
"We are increasing border controls because we are concerned… first and foremost about Malaysians who frequently visit the area.
"In my view, given the current tense security situation, our people should reduce travel there and try to avoid visiting the conflict zone at this time. That is the best course of action," he said.
Khalid (above) spoke to reporters today after the awards, decorations and medals ceremony held in conjunction with the 77th birthday of Malacca Governor Ali Rustam at Seri Negeri, Ayer Keroh.
Earlier at the ceremony, Khalid received the Darjah Gemilang Seri Melaka award, which carries the title Datuk Seri.
He expressed hope that the conflict would be resolved peacefully to ensure continued security along the nation's border.
"We pray that everything can be settled amicably, and that both countries, especially along the border, remain safe and peaceful," he said.
Meanwhile, a curfew was imposed in Narathiwat province from 10.15pm Aug 22 until 5am the following morning, following more than 50 violent incidents reported across three provinces.
The loud explosions, heard from Narathiwat, sent shockwaves through border communities, rattling homes and raising alarm among residents in Kampung Lubok Gong and Kampung Tersang in Rantau Panjang.
