The Selangor government has blamed a “technical glitch” in its e-Sidang system for written replies stating “no information” to three questions raised by Sungai Ramal assemblyperson Shafie Ngah regarding Universiti Selangor (Unisel).
Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari’s special functions officer Nazri Noh said Unisel had submitted answers to the questions, but the information did not appear when the responses were printed.
“This sitting is using the e-Sidang system for the first time.
“As for the questions, Unisel had already submitted its initial answers. The answers are in the e-Sidang system. But when they were printed out, it showed ‘no information’.
“There may have been a system error,” Nazri told Malaysiakini, adding that he had contacted the Selangor state assembly office for clarification.
The issue arose after Shafie received written responses last week to three questions on Unisel, all of which stated “no information”.
“How can Unisel progress if this is how things are?” Shafie asked, while using the hashtag #SelangorDeservesBetter.
‘Why did he not check first?’
Amirudin’s political secretary, Saifuddin Shafie, similarly said that the “no information” replies were caused by a technical issue.
“There was indeed an answer to the questions, and Unisel had provided it from the outset, but when we downloaded it from e-Sidang, it became ‘no information’,” he told Malaysiakini.
Saifuddin also criticised Shafie for raising the matter publicly without first checking with the state assembly administration.
“How is it that, as a former deputy speaker, Shafie did not first check with the state assembly office?
“Rather than issuing criticism, the Sungai Ramal assemblyperson should have sought clarification on the actual situation from the state assembly administration.
“The tendency to blow issues out of proportion is an inherent trait of PAS leaders,” he said.
When contacted, Selangor state assembly speaker Lau Weng San said any assemblypersons unhappy with the replies they received to their questions can formally raise the matter with the Rights and Privileges Committee for investigation.
“So the more important question is: Has he (Shafie) done so?” Lau told Malaysiakini.
Unisel’s actual answers
Contrary to “no information”, Shafie’s questions received detailed responses from Unisel, which Malaysiakini sighted.
On the elected representative’s first question about efforts to promote student enrolment, Unisel said it had carried out various initiatives in 2026, including a 50 percent tuition fee subsidy for Selangor-born students and residents.
Other initiatives included a “Free Education Scheme” for foundation programmes, an SPM outreach programme at 50 selected secondary schools and a 50 percent early-bird discount on enrolment fees for new students.
In response to another question on students from China, Unisel said it had enrolled 159 international students from the country as of July 2026.
The e-Sidang system is a digital platform used to manage and register matters related to state assembly sittings, including the uploading of documents. - Mkini
