PETALING JAYA: A Facebook user today uploaded a photograph of Dr Zakir Naik, currently at the centre of an investigation in his home country over allegations of money laundering and terrorism, confirming the fugitive Indian Muslim preacher’s presence in Malaysia.
Egyptian Facebook user Dr Mohamed Said uploaded the picture at about 2.20pm just after Friday prayer at the Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Mosque, or popularly known as the Iron Mosque.
“Praise be to God, we joined Friday prayer with Dr Zakir Naik at the Sultan Zainal Abidin mosque in Malaysia,” he said.
This comes after investigators in India were informed of Naik’s links with notorious gangster Dawood Ibrahim.
According to Indian news portal, The Siasat Daily, Dawood’s brother, Iqbal Kaskar, and Naik’s chief financial officer, Aamir Gazdar, had revealed to police that Dawood, who is in self-exile in Pakistan, had helped fund Naik’s Islamic Research Foundation (IRF).
Last month, Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed denied a report by the Times of India that Naik was in Malaysia hiding from Indian authorities.
“They had in the past, also reported wrongly when claiming that the Malaysian government had given Naik citizenship,” he had told FMT on Aug 18.
Naik, who has riled up civil society and non-Muslim groups in Malaysia over his speeches touching on Hinduism and Christianity, was given permanent resident status by the Malaysian government about five years ago.
His Indian passport was revoked in July in an effort to restrict his movements, but he was reportedly granted Saudi citizenship. -FMT
