NEWLY appointed Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Hanipa Maidin sparked a small frenzy during Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s monthly address this morning when he fainted and fell off the stage just minutes into the prime minister’s speech.
In front of close to 300 civil servants in Putrajaya, the 48-year-old Sepang MP collapsed and fell from the half-metre high stage onto the marbled tarmac.
Dr Mahathir immediately halted his speech as paramedics rushed to help. Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail also ran over to check on Hanipa.
Less than three minutes later, Hanipa regained consciousness and Dr Mahathir continued with his speech.
Hanipa, who had suffered a stroke in parliament two years ago, was then transported on a stretcher to an ambulance and taken to Putrajaya Hospital.
On April 5, 2016, several MPs found Hanipa slumped over his table and frothing at the mouth in Parliament.
He was rushed to the National Heart Institute (IJN) before being transferred to Hospital Kuala Lumpur, where he underwent a two-hour surgery for a brain haemorrhage.
Hanipa returned to parliamentary duty in October 2016, where he began using a cane. He did not use a cane this morning.
Hanipa was recently appointed deputy minister to assist Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department for Legal Affairs Liew Vui Keong.
Besides Liew, others who attended the monthly civil service gathering included Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department for Religious Affairs Dr Yusuf Mujahid Rawa and Chief Secretary to the Government Ali Hamsa.
