Perak telcos owe RM1.7m in licence fees, says exco member

The Perak state government will keep tabs on telecommunication companies (telco) that install transmitter towers but do not pay the licence fees to the local authorities (PBTs).
State Communications, Multimedia, NGO and Cooperative Development Committee chairman, Hasnul Zulkarnain Abd Munaim said that the estimated total licence fee arrears for the transmitter towers now stood at RM1.7 million.
"After July 31, action will be taken against telcos that still fail to pay the licence fees,” he told reporters after visiting the Malaysia Internet Centre at Kampung Titi Serong near Parit Buntar, today.
Hasnul added that a new Act will have to be drafted to replace the Second-hand Dealers Act,1946 which was no longer relevant in curbing cable thefts.
On the Malaysia Internet Centres, he hoped the centres could be utilised as media operation centres for the Sukan Malaysia (Sukma) 2018 in September where the events would be held in 12 districts across the state.
"We would be grateful if the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) let us use the facilities as the state does not have a budget to set up a media centre in each district," he said adding that there were 66 internet centres statewide.
