GEORGE TOWN: A video of a rodent rummaging through a bakery shelf at a hypermarket in Shah Alam has recorded over a million views on Facebook, with the hypermarket in question ordered closed for a few days for a cleanup.
Facebook user Alia Ismail first spotted the giant rat on Monday night while shopping with her son.
The rat was seen nibbling at the packed bread and buns, even coming out for a quick peek at shoppers before going back into the rack.
“Want to buy bread in Tesco? Think again. When I told the Tesco folks, they replied: ‘Satu Tesco ada tikus bang… memang macam itu’,” she said in her FB post.
Alia then alerted the Food Safety and Quality Division of the Health Department.
The Tesco outlet was shuttered on Tuesday and will reopen only tomorrow.
According to a follow-up post by Alia, the entire bakery area had been cleared and the store was going through a massive clean-up.
In an email to FMT, a Tesco spokesperson said it had destroyed all the bakery items on display and assured it was an isolated incident.
“We also temporarily closed our Setia Alam store on Tuesday to allow for a thorough cleaning and rectification work to prevent future incidents.
“We expect to reopen the store at noon on Thursday, July 19. We regret any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure and we sincerely apologise for the incident,” the spokesperson said. -FMT
