8 Malaysians nabbed in Australian raids on worker exploitation ring

PETALING JAYA: Eight Malaysian nationals have been detained in Australia following raids in two separate locations by Australian Border Force (ABF) officers.
news.com.au reported that authorities nabbed five Malaysians, believed to have been involved in the agricultural industry, in the first raid at a home in Torrensville, a suburb in Adelaide, South Australia.
They are being held in an immigration facility pending their deportation.
According to the news portal, two of the five who were nabbed were suspected to be involved in the management of a worker exploitation syndicate with links to New South Wales.
On the same day, ABF officers raided a property in Euston, New South Wales, where another three Malaysians were detained, news.com.au reported.
ABF commander James Copeman said the raids were part of Operation Battenrun, which targets illegal foreign workers and organised migration fraud.
Illegal workers, he said, were extremely vulnerable and are often “underpaid and poorly treated”.
The raid, the portal reported, is not linked to a series of similar arrests in August where a Thai man and two Malaysian nationals were detained. - FMT
