PETALING JAYA: The Attorney-General will order an inquest to determine the cause of death of fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim, says Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
The Home Minister said Tommy Thomas had informed him on this following a discussion on the development of the case.
“He informed me that he will order the magistrate to conduct an inquest to discover Muhammad Adib’s cause of death.
“He is doing so under his authority as the prosecutor under Section 339 (1) of the Criminal Procedure Code,” Muhyiddin said in a statement on Thursday (Dec 27).
The prosecutor would also request that the court set a date for the hearing as soon as possible, he added.
“The prosecutor will also assist the magistrate in conducting the inquest,” Muhyiddin said.
Under the inquest proceedings, the magistrate would have wide-ranging jurisdiction to discover the cause of death, he added.
“The cause of death being (to determine) whether it was caused or expedited by any illegal action by others,” he said.
Muhyiddin said the police had already recorded statements from several persons of interest, as well as conducted a reenactment of the incident that led to Muhammad Adib’s injuries.
“The post-mortem conducted by the Forensic Unit has also uncovered a few clues over the cause of death,” he said.
Muhammad Adib, 24, succumbed to his injuries on Dec 17 after being attacked by a mob during last month’s Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple riots.
