Bishop: Pray for a just, benevolent gov't

A Malaysian bishop today reminded all Christians in the country to pray for the government so that it would be a just and benevolent authority that took care of everyone.
In saying this, Bishop Ong Hwai Tek, who is Malaysian Churches Council acting president, said followers of Christianity should remember the story of the ancient Greek king Zeleucas who punished his own son for stealing from his kingdom.
"The kingship of King Zeleucas reminds us to also pray for our government so that it is a just and benevolent government that takes care of everyone in Malaysia.
"A government that is committed to an even playing field where all, big or small, many or few in number, male or female, rich or poor, young or old, will have a secure and equitable place under the Malaysian sun," he said in his speech at a Christmas hi-tea reception in Petaling Jaya today.
Ong also cited the story of the late South African president Nelson Mandela whom he said had demonstrated to the whole world his commitment for a post-apartheid government that "justly takes care of everyone".
The story of Zaleucas tells of how he put out his son's eye after having issued a decree earlier that thieves who were caught and convicted would have their eyes put out.
Earlier in his speech, Ong reminded Christians of the true value and meaning of Christmas which he said had been "hidden and diluted" with the prevalence of commercialisation. - Mkini
