Cameron Highlands seat: MACC begins probe into allegations

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has begun investigations into allegations of corruption during the 14th general election in the Cameron Highlands parliamentary constituency.
MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Azam Baki said investigation papers had already been opened but only provided scant details, NST Online reported.
“I can confirm that investigation papers have been opened … but I cannot reveal anything about who is being investigated as it is still on-going.
“If there is any development in the case, we will inform you later,” he said when contacted by the daily.
On Friday, the High Court here, sitting as an election court, had nullified MIC’s election victory in Cameron Highlands, saying there was vote-buying involved, as alleged by DAP’s M Manogaran.
Judge Azizah Nawawi, in allowing Manogaran’s election petition, said the petitioner had proven beyond reasonable doubt that money was given to voters during the campaign period.
She added that the Election Commission would be notified of the court’s decision.
The Election Court’s ruling affects Cameron Highlands incumbent MP, C Sivarraajh, who is at risk of losing his seat. He has 14 days to file his appeal to the Federal Court.
Earlier, Bernama reported BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as saying MIC would be given the chance to contest the Cameron Highlands parliamentary seat if a by-election is held there. -FMT
