While the Dewan Rakyat has four more days of sitting before ending its final session for the year, the government is considering adding two more days of sitting to complete all pending matters for this session.
A well-placed government source said according to Parliament's calendar, the 2019 Budget bills will pass through the committee stage and be voted on tomorrow.
“This means the government has only two more days to settle all the remaining bills pending. Think about it… you have so many bills on the order paper, how can you possibly finish them all?
“We don't want any rushed overnight debates, we want quality debates,” the source told Malaysiakini.
Asked whether Putrajaya would table the bill to abolish the death penalty, the source did not rule it out.
“It has not been decided. The attorney-general has to prepare the bill and then it has to be decided by the cabinet.”
The cabinet will meet on Friday, its scheduled meeting day.
According to Parliament's calendar, next Monday (Dec 10) and Tuesday (Dec 11) have been allocated to pass all remaining bills and wrap-up other government business before the 2018 session is ended and the House adjourned sine die.
There are 10 bills to be debated, comprising seven Finance Ministry bills and three Education Ministry bills.
The seven Finance Ministry bills are the Finance Bill 2018, the Income Tax (Amendment) Bill 2018, the Labuan Business Activity Tax (Amendment) Bill 2018, the Customs (Amendment) (No.2) Bill 2018, the Excise (Amendment) Bill 2018, the Sales Tax (Amendment) Bill 2018 and the Service Tax (Amendment) Bill 2018.
The three Education Ministry bills are the Universities and University Colleges (Amendment) Bill 2018, the Private Higher Educational Institutions (Amendment) Bill 2018 and the Educational Institutions (Discipline) (Amendment) Bill 2018. - Mkini
