KUALA LUMPUR: A vehement "no way!" was the response of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad when asked the possibility of former Umno members eventually dominating Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia.
The Prime Minister said accepting former Umno members into the party did not mean they would take over one day.
"No way. They cannot hold any office until the next election," he said.
On Pakatan Harapan's concerns that Bersatu was accepting people with tainted pasts, Dr Mahathir said everyone could apply to join.
"Everybody can apply. Even you can apply," he said.
On another matter, Dr Mahathir said that he held the final say whether P. Waytha Moorthy would remain in the Cabinet.
"Well, the people can express their opinion. It's up to me to decide," he told reporters after the inaugural Dr Mahathir Mohamad Leadership Series here Wednesday (Dec 19).
He was responding to calls and pressure from various parties for the resignation of Waytha Moorthy following the death of fire fighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim.
Asked if he was satisfied with Waytha Moorthy's performance so far, Dr Mahathir said: I'm okay. I feel okay".
The Minister in the Prime Minister's Department for National Unity and Social Well-being had slammed authorities for their slow response to the Nov 26 riot at the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in Subang Jaya. - Star
