PETALING JAYA: The Election Commission (EC) will notify the Dewan Rakyat on Monday about the Cameron Highlands seat falling vacant.
EC chairman Azhar Azizan Harun said the 14-day period for incumbent MP C Sivarraajh to appeal against the Election Court decision to nullify his victory lapsed on Friday.
“In line with Article 54(1) of the Federal Constitution, the EC will fill the federal seat vacancy in 60 days from Dec 15,” he said.
Last month, the Election Court revoked Sivarraajh’s victory in the May 9 general election. The court found there were elements of vote-buying involved during the election campaign period.
Sivarraajh had said on Wednesday that he will not challenge the Election Court’s decision, adding that Barisan Nasional opted to fight for the cause of the people in a by-election rather than take up a legal case.
Cameron Highlands has traditionally been an MIC seat. It was won by Sivarraajh in the May 9 polls with a 567-vote majority.
Azhar said EC will call for a meeting to discuss the Cameron Highlands by-election on a date to be fixed later. - FMT
