KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) and nine city mayors will be empowered to deregister and remove abandoned cars, said Anthony Loke.
The Transport Minister said this will be done after amendments to the Road Transport Act are made.
The amendments will also empower JPJ to regulate and collect fees on approvals for glass tinting of vehicles, and to deregister cars where the chassis numbers have been tampered with.
Another new development is that nine city mayors in Peninsular Malaysia will be empowered to appoint uniformed traffic wardens to help out with traffic in the cities.
The mayors will also be given the powers to remove abandoned vehicles left parked along the roadside.

The Bill is expected to be debated and passed in the present Parliament meeting.
At a press conference in Parliament lobby, Loke said he hopes the amendments will be passed and gazetted for enforcement by Jan 2019.
He added that he will make an announcement on the fees for tinting approvals. -Star
