Many Umno members want to join Amanah, says Mat Sabu

Amanah president Mohamad Sabu said the party has been approached by many Umno leaders who have expressed their intention to join it.

However, he said, most of them were from the divisional level.

"At the top levels like the supreme council, there has yet to be one. Many are from divisional levels.

"(Many but) not in the hundreds... But I think this is because they (Umno) are crumbling nationwide," he told reporters after the closing of Amanah’s national convention in Ipoh, Perak today.

Earlier, in his winding-up speech at the convention, Mohamad mentioned that many Umno members were 'eyeing' (mengintai) Amanah.

He also made a sarcastic remark about the Malay-based party, which he said could not "live" after losing the general election.

"We had said before that Umno, if they were to lose, they won't be able to live.

"Now many are leaving the party in droves, even (former Malacca chief minister) Rahim Thamby Chik is ditching Umno.

"And now they are eyeing Amanah. (But) we will see this case by case, person by person.

"God willing, we (also) want the people especially the Malays to choose Amanah," he said. -Mkini
