KOTA KINABALU: Christmas is usually associated with presents but a 38-year-old man here took this to another level when he tried to pass off methaphetamine worth over RM1 million as gifts.
Customs officers detained the man when he went to retrieve the drugs, weighing over 26kg, at a courier company here at 6.50pm last Friday.
Sabah Customs deputy director Madrim Tasan said the drugs were hidden in Da Guan Yin tea packets which were placed inside several boxes of disposable baby diapers.
“The man claimed the boxes were gifts for the Christmas holidays when asked by our men what the boxes contained,” Madrim told reporters here today.
He said Customs officers were tipped off about the packages and had waited for someone to pick up the items at the courier company.
He said the packages had come in from Kuala Lumpur.
The suspect has been remanded for further investigations until Jan 4.
This was the second biggest seizure of drugs this year, after the seizure of 103kg of drugs in Sandakan in February.
“Altogether, Sabah Customs handled 13 cases of drugs this year, and seized some RM9.2 million worth of drugs,” Madrim said. -FMT
