Najib lends support to anti-Icerd rally, calls for show of unity

Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak has urged his supporters to turn up at this weekend's rally against the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (Icerd).
He said the rally would send a message that the Federal Constitution should not be challenged.
“The peaceful gathering on Dec 8 will be organised by the National Sovereignty Secretariat and should be given our full support.
“It is our right to assemble and show our unity and resolve (on our stand that) the sovereignty of the constitution should not be challenged,” he said in a Facebook post this morning.
Najib expressed his hope that the rally by the ummah (congregation) would be held peacefully, harmoniously and in accordance with the law.
The rally, scheduled to take place this Saturday along Jalan Raja in Kuala Lumpur, is organised by Umno, PAS and several Muslim NGO groups in protest against Putrajaya’s original commitment to ratify Icerd.
Protest organisers claim that Icerd would jeopardise the position of the Malays, bumiputera, Islam and the Malay rulers, despite Putrajaya's assurances otherwise.
Eventually, Putrajaya buckled under pressure and announced that the United Nations treaty would not be ratified.
However, organisers said they would continue with the rally and turn it into a celebration instead.
