PAS has estimated that more than half a million people will flood the streets of Kuala Lumpur on Dec 8 for the anti-Icerd (International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination) gathering.
According to party deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, this target can be reached should PAS mobilise some 300,000 and Umno, 200,000 supporters.
"This is just a rough estimate because it depends on the mobilisation in various states," he told reporters in Parliament this afternoon.
Apart from PAS and Umno, the gathering is expected to witness the attendance of members from various Malay and Islamic organisations.
Earlier today, Umno supreme council member Tajuddin Abdul Rahman had also said that besides the 500,000 PAS and Umno crowd, another 50,000 people from various NGOs would be in attendance.
Participants can start converging in Kuala Lumpur a day earlier, he added, to avoid traffic jams.
Meanwhile, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan told reporters that the party had issued two reminders to its members to attend the gathering, even before the approval was given.
"Now that it has been greenlit, I think more people will be interested to attend.
"It is not an offense under the law, it is not an illegal assembly," he stressed, further thanking the government, as well as the police, and the Kuala Lumpur City Hall, for letting the gathering proceed. - Mkini
