Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said a delegation led by Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan met him in October to seek his advice on leaving Umno.
He said this when asked to respond to claims by Mohamad that he had urged the prime minister not to de-register Umno.
"No, they came to see and tell me that they are going to leave Umno.
"And, they wanted my advice, so that's all, nothing else," he told media after attending an event to mark the 20th anniversary of the Islamic Art Museum in Kuala Lumpur today.
Yesterday, veteran newsman A Kadir Jasin said the meeting took place on October 22 after a photograph emerged, depicting Mahathir hosting Mohamad to a meal.
Mohamad was accompanied by other top Umno figures such as former party secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, Larut MP Hamzah Zainuddin, Arau MP Shahidan Kassim and Tanjung Karang MP Noh Omar.
Hamzah, along with five others who were not in the photograph, quit Umno today.
When contacted for immediate comments to Mahathir's allegation, Mohamad told Malaysiakini: "No comment."
Yesterday, Mohamad had denied that he met Mahathir to discuss switching parties."It was just a courtesy call,” claimed Mohamad. -Mkini
