Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad today said his political secretary Zahid Mohd Arip will continue to serve until proven guilty of corruption involving former Felda chairperson Isa Samad.
"We still serve (if we) are charged but cannot if we are convicted," he told the media in Kuala Lumpur today.
"There was an accusation only, we do not know if it is true," he added.
Zahid was implicated in the corruption charges brought against Isa today.
Zahid, who was Isa's former special officer, is mentioned in nine of the 10 charges against Isa who was charged with receiving RM3 million in kickbacks from Felda's purchase of a hotel in Kuching.
According to the charges, Zahid was alleged to have been the intermediary between Ikhawn Zaidel, a director in Gagasan Abadi Properties Sdn Bhd, and Isa.
The bribes were meant to facilitate Felda's purchase of the Merdeka Hotel & Suites in Kuching when Isa was the land and smallholders agency's chairperson.
The bribes were allegedly given between July 21, 2014, and Dec 11, 2015.
Zahid had previously been arrested by the MACC in August 2017 over the hotel deal and was remanded for eight days.
He declined to comment when contacted by Malaysiakini today.
Zahid is also a supreme council member in Mahathir's Bersatu.
In the 14th general election, he contested against then prime minister Najib Abdul Razak and two others in Pekan and came in third with 7,662 votes. - Mkini
