Police obtain four-day remand on Azwanddin

Police have obtained a four-day remand on the Jaringan Melayu Malaysia president Azwanddin Hamzah to facilitate investigation into his inflammatory speech two days ago.
This was revealed by his lawyer Mohd Imran Tamrin at the Klang sessions court today.
Azwanddin was arrested by police at yesterday following the threat he made to attack a police station if the authorities did not arrest the perpetrators of last month's Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman temple riots.
At a rally in Klang two days ago, Azwanddin also allegedly insulted the Minister in the Prime Minister's department P Waythamoorthy by referring to him by the P-word, which is offensive to the Indian community.
"He will be remanded until Sunday.
"Police had informed that they need to conduct a thorough investigation and obtain intelligence report on Azwanddin," Mohd Imran (below) said.
He said Azwanddin is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code which deals with criminal intimidation, as well as Section 504 for insulting a person.
Earlier, Azwanddin, clad in a blue shirt, arrived at about 9am in a police truck. He was handcuffed and escorted to the chamber along with several detainees.
A group of about 20 supporters including NGO group Gagasan 3 chairperson Ragvinder Singh @ Reggie Jessy and actress Ellie Suriati were present to offer Azwanddin support.
Lawyer: The word "attack" is subjective
Mohd Imran said the police must take into consideration that the word "attack" which Azwanddin had uttered in his speech has a broad interpretation.
"The word 'attack' has a broad interpretation. As an activist and an individual, Azwanddin does not possess a strength or facility to literally attack a police station.
"He is not part of any armed group. This is what the investigating officer needs to evaluate," he told the media, adding that there were eight police reports lodged against Azwanddin.
Mohd Imran urged the police to not only investigate Azwanddin, but also conduct a thorough investigation on incidents surrounding the fracas at the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman temple.
"Don't only focus on Azwanddin. Please focus on those (involved in the temple riots) who are still scot-free out there," the lawyer said.
Mohd Imran added that he is concerned about Azwanddin's medical condition as he has thyroid and needs to take a regular medication. - Mkini
